Update 04/28/09: Version 2.1 of Gym Buddy adds support for supersets, which changes the output format of the emailed data you get from Gym Buddy. Thus you can no longer copy and paste it directly into the old spreadsheets.
This new spreadsheet however I believe is better. It doesn’t have the macro for importing the data, but judging from the feedback I received it wasn’t working anyway. ‘Copy & Paste’ is not that hard to do and it removes a whole level of complexity -- and with Excel, the less complexity the better.
The reason I think this one is improved is because it uses a calculated field to compact your set data into one field. As you can see from the shot of the Raw Data sheet below, the set data is summarized in column ‘O’, which makes your pivot table reports much easier to read. To get this however, you have to apply this formula to each newly added row. I’m not sure why Excel can’t do this automatically, but it can’t.
But it’s easy to do once you know how. You just have to grab the handle of the cell in the first row of data (which initially is row 3) in Column ‘O’ and drag it down to the end of your data. This will magically cause your calculated data to appear in Column ‘O’. There are better instructions in the ‘Instructions’ sheet, as well as advice on how to Copy and Paste. (Use the Text Import Wizard! This seems to be Excel’s one redeeming feature. In fact, I tried to make a Numbers ’09 spreadsheet since its new Categories feature make it a viable option, but its importing is so basic that I couldn’t even get it do a simple copy and paste -- it wouldn’t skip an empty field, if you care.).
If you were using the old spreadsheets, you can easily copy and paste the data in those over to this new one -- at least in the sense that anything is easy in Excel.
Once you get the data into the Raw Data sheet, you just need to refresh the pivot tables to reflect the new data. To do this, switch to a Pivot Table report by using the tabs at the bottom: either ‘By Date’, ‘By Workout’, or ‘By Exercise’.
You must have a cell selected in the Pivot Table -- not just on the sheet, but an actual cell that holds data. If there is no data, select a cell that says ‘(blank)’. Now you need to select the ‘Refresh Data’ menu command. In my version of Excel it is under the Data heading. You should get a warning saying the Pivot Table has been changed, and it should now show your data. Repeat this process for the other two Pivot Tables and you’re done. Congrats! You have survived Excel.
You can select which Date, Workout or Exercise you would like to view by choosing it from the drop-down menu in the top row of your report.
