What’s new in Gym Buddy 1.4?  01/24/09

First off, several users had reported serious crashes.  Upon investigation, it turned out they all had jailbroken phones with Cydia installed, which can download a different version of sqlite3 that is more strict than the native one.  I believe these crashes have been fixed with 1.4.  Unfortunately, the resulting reviews have not been fixed and my sales have reflected this.  So if you like Gym Buddy, please leave a positive review on iTunes (and mark the bad ones as ‘Not Helpful’).  Thank you!

A new icon!  No one seemed to like the old one, so this is what I came up with.  Is it any better?

Here is what I almost went with:

The main addition to 1.4 is my first implementation of a chart.  Some users are having trouble finding it.  It is accessed from a button on the exercise detail screen, which you get to by touching the ‘Blue Chevron’ in the root level of the Exercise tab, or in the second level of the Workout tab.  I will be adding it to the History tab as well in 1.5.

I really wanted to do a chart that was useful, not just to do it as I think some other apps have done.  The problem is first of all comparing sets, which I’ve handled with the One Rep Max concept, and people seem to like that.  (One thing that I think was in 1.3 but that I didn’t mention, was that Gym Buddy now ‘celebrates’ when you set your One Rep Max for an exercise by flipping the screen several times.  Woohoo!)

The second problem is that your performance is greatly affected by what you have done previously.  That is, you have more strength for your first set, than your 3rd one, but also what if your first set is only a warm-up, etc.  So I decided to graph each set independently, but also graph your best set for that workout.  (A workout is defined as all sets within a two hour time period, so you may have more than one workout per day.)  You can show or hide each set by pressing the appropriate button.

Gym Buddy now has sound!  You can turn it on or off from the settings screen, which is accessed by touching the ‘sprocket’ in the navigation bar when at the root level of the Workout tab.  This is also where you can choose your theme colors, including the default ones.  (Yeah, the ‘Colors’ theme was a huge mistake that also killed my reviews.)

Anyway, I hope you like it.  Next up for 1.5?  Countdown timers!  My implementation will blow all other apps away, I promise.
